The problem that pharma industry is facing is caused by multiples issues they have to face. In my previous post I outlined the first cause. Here is the second:

National reimbursement and insurance bodies are increasingly making campaigns for the promotion of cheaper generic drugs. Generic drug companies’ competition is putting pressure and prices are going down.

As a result, pharmaceutical companies are maximizing their efforts in lifecycle management and improving their sales force effectiveness. A branded drug loses between 15 to 30% market share after first generic launch and between 75 to 90 % in subsequent launches according to “The pharmaceutical industry Outlook to 2015” Business Insights p26

The pharmaceutical industry Outlook to 2015” Business Insights p26

Blockbuster come off patent / Expiran las patentes de los "blockbuster" (2)

En castellano más abajo

In my previous post I talked about the problems that big pharmas are facing. This is one of the causes:

The pharmaceutical industry growing strategy failed because they are not able to bring enough number of molecules to the market. This problem is aggravated by the blockbuster come off patent. A loss up to 80% of sales of the drug during the year follows patent expiration. To illustrate: There were 58 blockbusters on the market in 2002; by 2008 22 of these have lost their patent protection. The result is a slow down in total blockbuster sales (estimated 2005-2008 CAGR 1.6% compared to 9% in 2002-2005 period) according to “Beyond the blockbuster drug” Business Insights p31.

The pharmaceutical industry challenges / Los retos del sector farmacéutico (1)

Más abajo en castellano

The pharmaceutical industry is facing a number of problems that are making difficult for them to maintain the double-digit growing that they experienced in the ’90.

Traditionally, pharmaceutical industry was an investment choice not only by its steadily growing but its safety. Benefits were fueled by blockbuster sales and every company involved in drug development focused on diseases with high prevalence. However, regulatory requirements fixed by the FDA and the EMA lead to a reduced number of approvals while the R& D costs were rocketing. Experts talk about the “innovation gap”.

According to the Tufts Centre for Drug Development, one out of five molecules entering in clinical trials reach the market. Taking into account that the top 20 pharmas in the world need at least 3 new approvals to maintain two-digit growth, it throws out that they need to enter in clinical trials at least 15 molecules each year.

This is good for biotech companies. They are fueling the pharma's pipeline... This is why we (Innovative Bioconsulting) are helping our clients to look attractive not only to investors but also to big pharmas.
In the coming days I will list the 3 main causes of this big pharma’s problem.

About the Chinese "opportunity" / Sobre la "oportunidad" china

Last February I was interviewed by Cotizalia, an on-line business newspaper. They asked me if it would be interesting [for a biotech company] to establish in China. This is what I answered:

As there are great advantages going there, there are additional problems. Cultural difference is important, and an controlled economy and socialist, which can be inconvenient for the future development of the company and is also at the expense of the impositions of government. Not everything is as easy as wanting to leave. Chinese culture is very different from ours, and this must be taken into account when structuring the opportunity.

Moreover, I think it is suicidal for the Western countries to continue transferring knowledge and technology to who will be our major competitors. What is our destiny when they do not need us? I advocate buying, investing and consuming goods and services or Western Europeans stop feeding the lion one day could devour us.

Yesterday I read two disturbing things. First, China was publically and officially critiquing the US for their debt rating. This is, at least, the second time that China does that, they are not afraid of the most powerful (till now) nation in the World. Second, in a much more lower level, I read the following in The IPKat (a very interesting blog on intellectual property issues):

Recently this Kat wrote about a number fake Apple stores in Kunming in China. Since posting, Chinese officials have found five fake Apple stores in Kunming. However, only two of the five stores have been shut down. Somewhat surprisingly, the two stores were closed because they did not possess a business licence required for all commercial retail operations, not because they had infringed Apple's IP rights.

Apple has now taken matters into its own hands and filed a lawsuit for infringement of its trade marks in the US District Court in the Eastern District of New York against three companies and approximately 52 named and John Doe defendants. Exact details of the lawsuit are unknown at this stage because the documents are sealed to all except for legal counsel and the parties involved. However, CNET reports that Apple has filed a motion seeking a temporary restraining order as well as a preliminary injunction on the named defendants.

It would appear that Apple is not the only target in Kunming: last week, a number of outlets reported that Kunming also has a fake IKEA, a store is called '11 Furniture'. The first thing to note is that 11 Furniture's Chinese name 'Shi Yi Jia Ju' sounds very much like IKEA's Chinese name 'Yi Jia Jia Ju'. The second is that, inside, the look and feel of the store is virtually identical to expected in an authorised IKEA outlet. For instance, there is the similar blue-and-yellow colour scheme, signage, mock-up rooms, rocking chairs, miniature pencils and mininalist wooden tables in the cafeteria. [...]

Worried? If Chinese Government does not take any measure to protect Western companies' rights in China, does anyone think that a Western biotech company founded there is not going to have IP problems? Take into account that China is a socialist country: private property is not recognised… the company doesn’t legally belong to the investors…

Finally, China is not afraid of the US as I mentioned before. China may argue that they have laws protecting IP, and foreing investements but, do they enforce Law? Sometimes, when they want to because they have some interest. They are the new empire. Don not forget it.
Don't tell me that China is a great opportunity. It is not. At least, not for our countries, or our beliefs. Individual and human rights are not in the Chinise agenda. Probably they do not know what I am talking about... and they are starting in ruling the world. Scaring.

Biotech in Spain integrated in my LinkedIn Profile // Biotecnología en España integrado en mi perfil de LinkedIn

Más abajo en castellano

I received yesterday an e-mail form a good friend of mine surprised by my last post. He told me that he was surprised because he knows that I usually use more LinkedIn than Facebook. So, how was it possible that I started sharing this blog contents in Facebook but not in LinkedIn?

Well, in fact this blog is also available through my LinkedIn profile! Perhaps you are right now reading it there...

If this is not the case, have a look >> my LinkedIn profile

I didn’t say anything because this is just an app that puts your blog on your profile, that’s it, no more intervention on my part. The Facebook fan page is a little bit different because it requires some work on my part. In fact, I prepared the profile picture and the nice “buttons” you can see in the top of the wall.

To visit my Liked in profile, please, click here

To visit my Facebook fan page, please, click here

I would be more than happy to learn about your opinions!

The social networks are changing completely the internet landscape. Just 2 or 3 years ago, having a blog like this one was cool stuff. But today this is not enough.

I opened my Facebook and LinkedIn accounts almost in the starting of these platforms. I just used them as a source of information about customers and business partners. I even forgot that I had a LinkedIn account! However, little by little the social networks became an indispensable tool for professional and personal life.

Fortunately, my workload is reduced this month so I am taking the opportunity of thinking about improve my internet presence. I decided to create a Facebook fan page for this blog and helping my readers to follow its contents there.

Please, have a look on it in the following link and let me know your opinion (you should click “I like button” to get access to all the contents) >> Facebook Fanpage

Thank you!

¡Gracias!

Investing in Biotech today // Invertir hoy en biotecnología

En castellano más abajo

It's been said that computer & IT industry has certain parallelisms with biotech industry in terms of investment. There are obvious differences but, to certain point, there are surprising similarities.

Looking backwards to the computer industry in the '80s many people missed a great investment opportunity for a lack of meaningful information about what the future would bring. An investor who had reasonable vision of the computer industry’s actual future, a diversified portfolio within the sector, and determination to stay the course for 10 years or more, would have reaped an enormous return. Companies like Cisco, Intel or Micorsoft, just to name a few, created new industries more powerful and profitable than the most optimistic visionaries had predicted.

Some years ago, most investors who wish benefit from the impressive profit margins associated with drug development turn to the world’s established multinational pharmaceutical companies, just as investors turned to IBM 40 years ago. But investors with a reasonable and practical understanding of the biotech field have a great opportunity. Of course, investor’s losses are inevitable in an emerging industry but as Dell, Cisco, Intel and many others have proven the profits from picking just one winner and sticking with could have awesome returns.

Nevertheless, the experience of the early PC industry provides an instructive model for biotech investment. Investing in Commodore Computer in 1980 could have yielded a near total loss… thus, buy the very best emerging companies and hold them tenaciously to maturity instead of watching earnings and stock prices fluctuate daily.

I recommend the reading of Malkiel’s book “A random walk down to Wall Street” where you can find nice strategies for investing in the long run (and demonstrates that daily traders almost never beat the market!)

Castellano:

My good friend Lou Catoloupo, director of business development at Vivalis, borrowed me a book called "Business Science" of Gary P. Pisano. You can find all the info in the link.
This is not a new book, it is from 2006 but I think that it is still accurate. I haven't read it completely yet but I quickly reviewed its whole content and I found it extremely interesting. I recommend its reading.
